CBD + Weight Loss
What if we told you that there was a miraculous compound that could help you lose weight? What if we told you that this “miraculous compound” comes from the cannabis plant? Sounds almost too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well, it might be or it might not be. Right now, research is still in its infancy so a definitive conclusion has not been reached. To begin to understand how CBD can promote weight loss, you need to understand its interaction with those infamous cannabinoid receptors.
If you recall, there are two types of cannabinoid receptors within your endocannabinoid system (ECS): CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found predominantly in the brain and central nervous system whereas CB2 receptors are found all throughout the body. Because CBD stimulates cannabinoid receptors rather than directly activating them, it causes the body’s endocannabinoids to either block off or activate these receptors. Let’s just focus on those CB1 receptors for right now...
CBD + Appetite
Appetite is controlled by the hypothalamus, which is the region of the brain that is signaled predominantly by leptin. Leptin is a hormone that is produced by fat cells. It has been referred to as the “starvation hormone” because it is supposed to signal to the brain that there is enough stored fat so you can stop eating and burn calories at a normal rate. That means that leptin is likely responsible for suppressing food intake. While THC might cause an increase in hunger, CBD might actually have the opposite effect because of its relationship to leptin and your CB1 receptors in the hypothalamus. Yes, you read that correctly. CBD might actually act as an appetite suppressant because it does not activate CB1 – it blocks it off. When CB1 receptors are blocked off, appetite is inhibited because of an increase in leptin levels.
Trust us, we know how this all sounds. Cannabis use has long been associated with an increase in appetite, but that isn’t necessarily the case here. It’s not as black and white as we would like it to be. It’s more… brown and white. Wait, what?
White Fat vs. Brown Fat
Did you know that you have two different types of fat in your body? These two types of fat are ‘white fat’ and ‘brown fat’. We didn’t know much about these either until recently. Both white and brown fat are two types of adipose tissue, or what you might know as ‘body fat’. White adipose tissue (WAT), or white fat, plays a critical role in helping to maintain whole-body homeostasis, but an excess of white fat is not a good thing. On the other hand, brown adipose tissue (BAT), or brown fat, has the main function of turning food into body heat. But what does CBD have to do with these two types of fat? A lot, apparently.
‘Browning’ White Fat + Metabolism
The ECS is widely known for maintaining the body’s homeostasis, but it’s also responsible for controlling energy metabolism and thermogenesis. When you add CBD to the picture, that is where things get interesting. In 2016, there was a study completed that showed that CBD can turn lipids (‘bad’ fat) into ‘good’ fat. The study also concludes that CBD can cause fat to burn more efficiently by promoting thermogenesis. Pretty interesting, huh?
Can CBD Promote Weight Loss?
In conclusion, there is much evidence that CBD can promote weight loss, but there is still a lot of research that needs to be done. We foresee that this will be an ongoing unraveling of the truth behind CBD + weight loss. So, while we can’t say for sure the CBD will help you to lose weight, we can say that CBD can potentially help to promote weight loss.
